How to spend 24 hours in Hiroshima

Hiroshima is situated in the Chugoku region and is home to Japan’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage sight – the A-Bomb Dome located in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. During our travels around Japan we only had 24 hours to spend in Hiroshima and this is how we spent that time.

9am – 1pm

We arrived in Hiroshima on the Shinkansen bullet train. One of the great things about Japanese train stations is that they have lots of luggage lockers. As we arrived in Hiroshima too early to check into our accommodations we dropped off our backpacks, wasted no time and began sightseeing. We headed straight for the Hiroshima Peace Museum. The museum displays artifacts, photographs and paintings that demonstrate what Hiroshima was like before and after the bombing. There are many stories told by victims and their families with personal belongings of the victims are also on display. After the museum we headed to the peace memorial park. This park was opened in 1954 and has many monuments dedicated to the victims of the atomic bombing.

1pm – 2pm

Lunch time! While in Hiroshima its a must that you try the local speciality that is Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. This is a different style of okonomiyaki that you would find in Osaka. In Hiroshima they add soba noodles and it is delicious!!! Lunch finished it was time to go back to the station, collect our backs and checked into our accommodation.

3pm – 5pm

After we got checked in we made our way to Hiroshima castle. Before we entered the castle grounds, we walked around the moat that circles the castle grounds. As we walked around the moat we eventually came across the back entrance to the castle. Up the stone steps we climbed, we entered the main compound. From here we began a self guided tour of the castle surrounds. The castle and its grounds were beautiful and we enjoyed the sights.

5pm – Late

For dinner we headed to the laneways near Aioi-dori for delicious sushi. To wash down the sushi we visited an izakaya (traditional Japanese bar) to enjoy some local beer and we finished off the night with some karaoke.
