Paris is a city famous for its delicious cuisine. We only had 3 days in Paris and a list as long as our arm outlining all the foods and dishes we wanted to try. We decided that a food tour would be the best way to try many of the delights Paris has to offer in a short period of time.
We came across Devour Tours on Instagram and based on the many excellent reviews we and reasonable price we booked a tour. Devour Tours is a small tour operator that specializes in food tours across Europe. The company originally started in Spain but has since expanded to France, Portugal, Italy and England just to name a few.
We booked the Paris Ultimate Food Tour which took us through the charming Marais neighborhood. As we walked from food establishment to food establishment our guide talked about the history of the area and shared stories about each food vendor we visited. Our guide was also very helpful and gave us tips on other restaurants to check out during our stay in Paris.
What should you expect on the Devour Tours ‘Paris Ultimate Food Tour’?
Stop One: The first stop on the food tour was Poilane, a famous bakery in the Marais area of Paris. The bakery originally opened in 1932 and has gone through generations of owners. They pride themselves on staying true to the traditions of bread making. We got to try their delicious croissant and pain au chocolate. It was the perfect start to our tour.
Stop Two: Our next visit was to Chez Alain Miam Miam located in the famous and historical market ‘Marché des Enfants Rouges’. Here we tried a socca crepe which made using chickpea flour, water and salt. It is delicious, crispy and the perfect snack. The socca crepe was chopped up into bite sized pieces and served in a brown paper bag. The bag of delicious crispy bites was passed around. Highly recommend trying the socca crepe while in France!
Stop Three: We then visited Jean-Paul Hevin, a famous award winning chocolatier in France. Here we at the best macrons and chocolates we have ever tasted. Each person on the food tour got to choose a one flavor of macron. They had every colour of the rainbow and so many flavors to choose from. We also got two flavors of chocolate a dark ganache and a milk chocolate praline.
Stop Four: Next up was Sacha Finkelsztajin. This no-frills shop supplying traditional Jewish baked goods, sandwiches & groceries since 1946 is located in the Jewish quarter. Here we got to try their delicious pierogi. The owners of this bakery gave their pierogi a very French twist by surrounding the traditional meat filling with brioche.
Stop Five: We then visited a small delicatessen first established in the 1920’s. A la Ville de Rodez sells a variety of meats, cheeses and products from the Aveyron region of France. This was my favorite stop on the tour. Here we got to try a selection of meats, cheeses and breads. It was delicious!!!!
Stop Six: Next up on the food tour was a stop and the famous Les Philosophes restaurant. Our tour guide had a large table reserved for us and we all sat around the table and were served a hearty bowl of French onion soup. This restaurant prides themselves on using only the best of locally sourced ingredients and the food was so good we ended up returning the following day for lunch. If you visit this restaurant make sure to try their beef bourguignon.
Stop Seven: Our final food stop of the day was at Maison Aleph. This Levantine bakery specialize in pastry nests. We had never seen a pastry like this before, it was nearly too pretty to eat! The little crunchy pastry nests are topped with Normandy cream. The centre of the nests are filled with flavours ranging from dark chocolate-sumac to pistachio-mastic and citron-cardamon.
Stop Eight: Our final stop took us to the basement of L’Etiquette to try some natural wines. Here we learned about the different classifications of wine and what makes a wine natural. We got a generous sampling of one white and one red wine. It was the perfect ending to the food tour.
Our Final Verdict
After the tour we defiantly gained a greater appreciation for French food. The tour gave us the opportunity to try foods and visit food establishments we may have not otherwise tried. We believe that one of the best ways to experience and learn about other cultures is through food and Devour Tours gave us the perfect introduction to Parisian cuisine.
